Advanced level

Catharine Newell earned a BA in fine art from the University of California, Santa Barbara. In 2000, a workshop she took from Narcissus Quagliata transformed the direction of her glasswork. Since then, she has exhibited her work and taught workshops around the world.

Developing and refining a skilled, intuitive approach to powder and frit work is the focus of this conceptually driven course. Sketches and single layer studies lead to black and white, as well as color, stacked projects. Using sheet glass, powders and frit, participants will expand their kiln-forming skills while acquiring a greater understanding of composition, line, spatial perspective, layering strategies and use of color. A highly personal journey for each student, course emphasis will be placed upon conceptual development by examining influence and intention through ongoing discussion, critique and student/visiting artist presentations.
