Richard Parrish is a studio glass artist, architect, and glass instructor who lives and maintains a studio in Montana. Richard exhibits at the American Craft Council shows in Baltimore, at the Philadelphia Museum show, and accepts large private and public glass commissions.

Richard studied art, design and architecture in undergraduate school and in graduate school at the Cranbrook Academy of Art.  He has taught design, color theory and architecture at Montana State University, the University of Michigan, and at Bullseye Glass, and returns to Vitrum for the second time to teach a newly-developed course on color theory for glass.

This class will explore color principles, theory and applications using Bullseye glass and kilnforming techniques.  The intent is to increase our understanding of color and how we can use it in our glass work to both enhance the content and increase the beauty of the finished piece.

Conventional color theory, which is generally based on opaque or pigmented color, provides the departure point for our explorations in glass. The goal is to learn to understand color in terms of the unique qualities that glass exhibits:  transparency, translucency, light reflection and refraction, and depth.

The class offers a hands-on exploration of glass and color. Participants will make numerous color samples using Bullseye glass that can be used as reference material in their own studio, and can be expanded over time. They will also participate in a series of exercises developing color palettes and exploring the application of color principles.  A final project will provide an opportunity for each participant to utilize the knowledge he or she has gained.

People often comment on Richard’s use of color in his glass work.  When asked about his approach to color, he usually answers that his motto is “fear no color.” Advanced level.
