There is a particular language that artists and designers use to articulate their processes and their work. Understanding this “visual vocabulary” will help you to plan and implement good design. Using pens, pencils, paper and glue, this low-key workshop is a solid introduction to the terminology and practice of these ideas. Please note: This class is a pre-requisite for Elements and Principles of Design for Kilnformers, where these ideas will be applied specifically to glass. If you never know where to start in your studio, this workshop is for you.

Students will make a single pocket vase during this one day class.
September 12, 2015

Functionality and beauty wrapped up in one elegant package! Using some of the softest colors in the Bullseye glass palette, students will create a centerpiece that beautifully compliments - but does not compete with -  seasonal floral contents (or other items, like chopsticks).

You'll learn the skills to successfully layup and fire the glass to create a small pocket within the form, and how to keep the pocket intact during a slump firing. Using pre-fired pieces and texture as design elements adds fine details to the project. Finally, Deb will share her tips on craftsmanship, including how to design for clean edges that require no coldworking.

Each student will have the opportunity to create one stunning piece in this one-day class. Glass and all other needed materials are provided in the tuition of $175.

This class is full, but a wait list is available.

Learn some of the easy ways you can intentionally trap bubbles in your kilnformed glass – bubbles that make intense starbursts of light- while you create a two piece servng set.

We’ll go over the basic methods commonly used to trap air between two pieces of glass, and then you’ll create two pieces – a plate and a coordinating square dish using a specially chosen palette. We’ll show you techniques for accurate placement of the elements to trap theses little spheres of light, and you’ll be on your way! We‘ll fire the two pieces after class, and then slump them into the appropriate molds.

Tuition of $155 includes all materials, firings and use of all needed tools for two finished pieces.

November 7, 2015

This one-day workshop offers students the opportunity for the focused study of kilnformed glass through sample making. In the “Color Surprises” workshop, the class will discuss and experiment with some specific hues that yield unexpected results when fired. An extensive collection of glass samples will be on hand to enhance discussion and inspire your color choices. Students will have access to the full Bullseye sheet glass palette for the creation of their own unique sample set. The usefulness of sample making and best practices, along with storage solutions, will be covered. Both experienced kilnformers and those new to the art form will benefit.

In the “Glass and Silver” workshop, the class will discuss and experiment with combinations of Bullseye Glass and silver foil and the magical reactions that occur when these two are fused together. Students will have access to the full Bullseye sheet glass palette that reacts with silver as we examine and discuss the way the silver reacts with the base glass, and how combining the two and selectively covering part of the silver creates a whole new color surprise!

The usefulness of sample making and best practices, along with storage solutions, will be covered, and each student will make 16 silver and glass reactions samples during the class. Both experienced kiln formers and those new to the art form will benefit.

Deb designed these for her holiday shows, and graciously agreed to share the concept and teach the technique. Her idea to design the sconce with strips instead of flat sheet glass results in some great optical changes as the viewer sees it from different angles.

You’ll start by designing a piece in a holiday theme, then you’ll create it using pre-cut strips of glass.  You’ll learn to accurately cut and assemble the strips, and how to securely dam them for the firing process. After the class, we’ll fire them and do any coldworking necessary, and slump them over a curved mold to shape the sconce so that it will stand up securely.

Tuition includes all materials and the use of needed tools.
